12 Responses to Friday Poll: Originals vs. Cover Versions
I’ve not heard the Dave Matthews version but I prefer the Hendrix to the Dylan, even though I don’t normally favour cover versions.
It does piss me off when people hear covers of songs I like, & can’t be arsed to hunt down the oiginal, or dismiss it because it isn’t heavy/techno/whatever enough for them.
What about cover albums? I hail Almost Blue by Elvis Costello in this respect.
I was thinking to myself that I’m probably the only person on earth who owns both the Deep Purple & Stevie Wonder versions iof We Can Work It Out. I’m something of a completist, & there can’t be many who’ve got these obscure (but good) albums & are into both artists.
Awesome idea Bella. But isn’t the answer obvious?!
I suggest Hallelujah. Obvious choice, really, but meh.
I’d like to suggest Help, by either The Beatles or The Damned.
A tough call.
“Light My Fire”, originally by The Doors…
The Doors
Erma Franklin
Stevie Wonder
UB40
Jose Feliciano
Massive Attack
Beastie Boys
Will Young
OR…! “You’ve Got a Friend”, by Carole King…
Carole King
James Taylor
Michael Jackson
Aretha Franklin
McFly
Johnny Mathis
Brand New Heavies
Andy Williams
…and many others, no doubt!

Of interest.

There’s also quite a few musician you haven’t named that have done that.
Tainted Love (Jones, Soft Cell, Manson), Hurt (NiN, Cash), Purple Rain (Prince, Nordenstam), Feeling Good (Simone, Muse, Eels)…
Sweet Child o mine: guns and roses or taken by trees?
I hope this video embeds properly, but if it doesn’t here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_N3CK-6CHk
A whole world of win right here.

Nothing wrong with Dylan’s original, but Hendrix’s is quite possibly the greatest cover version of any song. Ever.
The DMB arrangement of the song just blows.
